Thursday July 13, 7:30 pm Canaan Meetinghouse
The first reader will be James Wright who was
President of Dartmouth College for eleven years. But this reading
derives from his long-standing commitment to veterans rights and
veterans care. Wright, an ex-Marine, has devoted his post-presidency to
lobbying and speaking in behalf of vets and to researching and writing
on the men (and women) who actually fought in America's wars. He will
read from his recent book, "Enduring Vietnam: An American Generation and
Its War," about which US Secretary of Defense, James Mattis has
written: "
“Broad in scope and as human a history as could be written
of the “enduring” impact of our nation’s Vietnam experience, this is a
beautiful piece of work. … With honesty and compassion for those who
carried and still carry burdens from the war years, no book better
captures the totality of that era."
The second reader will be
renowned mystery author, Megan Abbott. Author of eight acclaimed books,
three times nominated for Edgar awards (for mystery writers and books),
she is one of the leading mystery writers of our era. She will read
from her new book, "You Will Know Me" that has been chosen as one of the
Best Books of 2016 by NPR, the Wall Street Journal, the Boston Globe,
the Washington Post, Publishers Weekly, and Kirkus Reviews.
